CONCERT 2

Conductor: Rex Hobcroft; David Carolane
Soloists: Lauris Elms; Nance Grant, Brian Hansford
Program: Brahms Alto Rhapsody; German Requiem
Reviews: John Sinclair, Herald, 30 May 1970. “But I heard (unfortunately) the Deutsche [sic] Requiem, with all those choruses that struggle laboriously upwards only to collapse like punctured tyres. But the performance under David Carolane did all that could be done to rescue the work from its own banality. The choral singing was accurate, sensitive and nicely shaped …”. Linda Phillips, “University Choirs in Brahms Program”, Sun, 30 May 1970. “Despite his sincere treatment and skilled direction, Mr Carolane seemed disinclined to move the work on a little as it progressed. The choral singing was very musical and clear, though the words could have been better articulated …”
