[Martin Long], “Varsity Choral Festival”, Sydney Morning Herald, 5 June 1959. “Although the annual Intervarsity Choral Festival austerely describes itself as non-competitive, there is always the temptation to enliven the necessarily austere program by trying to pick a winner. Out of the three university choirs taking part in the 10th festival … the choir of Queensland University still seemed on last night’s showing to hold the lead that it had established in previous years, although Sydney’s choir – especially on the score of intelligent musicianship – edged dangerously close … [In the combined work, the choir] produced some splendidly sonorous climaxes, and, even more effective, soft but richly scored passages in which the tone was beautifully controlled and integrated.”
